Description

The ATS 3f Aortic Heart Valve Animation was commissioned by ATS Medical to illustrate the form, function, benefits, and innovation behind their latest implantable bio-prosthesis, the ATS 3f Aortic Heart Valve. To illustrate these ideas, work on the animation began by meeting with members of ATS' marketing team to outline the objectives and message of the animation itself. From initial storyboard to the final delivered animation, these meetings would continue throughout the development cycle, with additional feedback coming from other members of ATS Medical, members of their research and development team, in addition to other cardiologists and thoracic surgeons.


Reference for The ATS 3f Aortic Heart Valve model was based on promotional, marketing, research and development images and movies, in addition to a physical ATS 3f Aortic Heart Valve. From this reference material and feedback from ATS, the form and function of the prosthesis was replicated in Maya. The look of the valve was accomplished via a combination of textures created in Adobe Photoshop, and procedural shaders created within Maya.


Animating the ATS 3f valve was accomplished by referencing movies provided of the physical valve functioning, and then replicating this motion as closely as possible using a cloth simulation. Once this was accomplished, keyframes of the animation were replicated as separate meshes to be hand tweaked for use in a blendshape series. In addition to blendshapes, the valve was animated using control curves around the base to animate the suture ring. The sutures, tabs, and external pledgets were constrained to the wall of the aorta through use of the djRivet tool. Additional blendshapes of the valve were used to smooth out certain parts of its animation that were being affected by its constraint to the animated aorta.


The heart used in this animation was a heart model from previous BioDigital animations, re-textured using Adobe Photoshop, including some shader cleanup, with additional shaders added for effects, such as transitions from fully opaque to partially transparent, or making certain sections fully transparent. For the animation, the aorta of the heart was almost entirely remodeled to better show the aortic sinuses. Animation of the heart was accomplished using multiple wire deformers. Shader animation was achieved through attributes and expressions.


The project in total was created using Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe After Effects.
